Beach run and farmer's market

We participated in the 4th of July Fireworks Race this morning. Monies benefit the cost of the parade bands (there are many and they come from all over, even outside the state) and fireworks (always a phenomenal display) coming up this holiday weekend. Attendance was good at 215 participants. Dad's time was just under 30 minutes to finish the 5K. Thanks D and AM for outfitting him in his patriotic attire!

The best news is that the farmer's market is open and we have LOCAL corn to eat for dinner. :-) Peaches are ready as well so we need to get my grandmother's canner out and wash the jars.

Yay for summer!

Trip to the Big Apple

We took a quick trip to NYC this week with Lisbeth, Keelyn and Ella to see American Girl Place, the Statue of Liberty and Mary Poppins. We rode taxis and a boat out to Liberty Island......neither for the faint of heart. We ate one of our meals at Ellen's Stardust Diner where promising singers and dancers wait tables (and entertain) while waiting for their Big Break on Broadway. Times Square is now pedestrian- friendly, allowing people to sit around in lawn chairs where once traffic flowed....pretty crazy! It's like a giant outdoor neon-lighted block party.

Father's Day on the cove

What a wonderful day with the entire family together enjoying good weather and food at
Dave and Ann Marie's. The six eldest grands were finishing up Camp Dave, an annual 4 day extravaganza of water play, boat rides, museums, even T-shirts and each other hosted by Uncle Dave and Aunt Annie. "When can I join the bunch?", asks Will. MW, Will loved being licked by Jellie, the resident black Lab, and toddling around behind his cousins, and especially his first boat ride. Thanks for such a great day! (Cool photo effects available at befunky.com).

Showers make flowers

The amount of rain we have had this week has nourished the flower gardens in town. A few years ago a horticulturist was hired to be on the town council and she has done an amazing job of planting flower beds and maintaining them. She replaces all the flowers in the beds as the seasons change, so the town landscaping is always changing and always unique.

Beach sisters

Every summer this group of nuns visits the beach and enjoys walking the boardwalk.  Love the picture!

As the  rain prediction becomes a reality this week, we consult our list of inside "projects" and decide to see "UP" in 3-D in Rehoboth.  Jim loves cartoons as much as any child and of course, when it can be in 3-D....even better!

We settle into a rainy end of week mode and greet this inactivity with Lorie's stack of beach reads and Jim's many photos to sort.  One photo project that was met with lots of approval was posters he had made of Kylie, Keelyn and Ella playing lacrosse and Layne, Eva and Jack playing on the beach.

Not all play

Life at the beach is not all play. There are still projects to be done on the house, though the list is dwindling. Today Jim took his design for a backyard covered bike storage area to 84 Lumber and Lord's Nursery and bought wood and pavers to build it.....all in one day!

Night and day

The beach replenishment job is a night and day  operation.  Lots of grown up men are watching these big Tonkas move the sand around!  As promised, the monster trucks will be gone in 10 days and we need to hope that we have no nor'easters this summer to undo all this work.

More sand and ice cream

Welcome to our blog! Beach time on Saturday included TCBY and watching movement of pipes to transport more sand onto the beach.  The replenishment project became necessary after last May's (2008) nor'easter took out the sand that had been restored!
