Post- Sandy Fun

While we were sequestered at Dave and Ann Marie's,  Jenni and Will came over b/c they had no power in N. VA.  For a while we sat and played SORRY.

But then that became boring and Jack and Will took their play outside into the very cold and misty air.

Took a walk with Eva.....

And then got on warmer clothes to play some more.

Birthday celebration at the Renaissance Festival

This weekend we celebrated David's, Layne's, Bobby's, Larry's and my birthday at the Renaissance Festival near Annapolis.  The RenFest is a collection of all kinds of people in all kinds of dress (medieval or not), all kinds of food eaten on a stick, shows and jousting.

Will was so very happy to be with his "cousin Friends"  Here he and Jack play a video game.

Resting under a tree, this fella represents many of the costumes we saw during the day.

Jousting...the real deal.

Birthday on the beach

What a lovely day to have a birthday and we spent it in one of my favorite places, doing what I like to do best on the beach....walk and read.

And since we have new phones, we were trying out the camera.......

Just lounging......

Day 4 Mystic Seaport

Another beautiful day and we spent it entirely in Mystic Seaport,  an historically correct,  rebuilt with many original buildings,  small community which supports ship building.  Lots of history here and both days busloads of school kids were being tourists with us.  We saw it all.

Rope.....school kids were taught how rope was made by hand.

Day 3 Mystic, CT

Another beautiful, clear autumn day.  We spent the morning at Mystic Seaport, learning about the restoration of the last wooden 1800s whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan.

The Toy Boat Building with the draw bridge in the background.

Here is a close-up of the draw bridge.

Jim went out on an afternoon sail on the schooner Argia.

Draw bridge up as the Argia returns.

The Argia passes the Steamboat Inn where we are staying.

Day 2 Newport, Rhode Island

We bid farewell to our new friend Daniesh, the inn keeper who  took such good care of us with yummy breakfasts and afternoon cookies and headed to Newport to walk the Cliff Walk and check out the homes and shops.  After that, we went to our next stop Mystic, CT where we are staying at the Steamboat Inn, a great B and B which has already fed us cookies and sherry at 5.

The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile path atop bluffs that overlook the sea.

Beautiful homes along the way on the Cliff Walk.

The view from our walk.

Then onto our walk through Newport.....

Trinity Church
They had a pumpkin sale and served us hot cider.

Day 1 Rhode Island

Finally found some color today, driving through a state park.

The stone fence encircles the entire perimeter of the park.

Then on to our boat tour of Newport Harbor, looking at light houses, mansions and yachts.
This is Plum Beach Light, built in 1899 and featured on RI license tags.

Castle Hill Light, a working light house run on solar power.

Mansions and yachts

Look at the size of these masts!

Rose Island Light.....no longer working, but you can spend a night here either in the light house or in the small red building.

Unfortunately, Jim did not photograph Lime Rock Lighthouse which has a unique history: when her father became ill in 1857, 15 year old  Ida Lewis assumed the job of light house keeper, a duty she kept until 1911.  In 1924 the tiny island was renamed Ida Lewis Rock.

Waiting for sunrise

We are in southern New England this week...today watching the sunrise on Narragansett Bay here in Warwick, Rhode Island.  Our B and B suite has a little porch for sunrise watching, our room has 180 degree views of the Bay....very lovely.

Today will be in the 70s....very unseasonal, but perfect for taking a boat ride to view light houses.

Sunset

Today was a lovely, clear day, so we headed out to check out the sunset, stopping at Mancini's first for their Thursday night half price pizza.

And here the sun sets over Assawoman Bay.....

Dewey goes pink

October is breast cancer awareness month.  I celebrated with not one but two mammograms and all turned out OK.  And yet I know others who are fighting the cancer battle and my thoughts and prayers are with these brave ladies.

Dewey  Beach was advertising this weekend's run to provide funds to breast cancer research.  We will see that pink ribbon often this month.
